Gay country performers find opportunity with
“Brokeback Mountain” release
by Joseph Brant- OAAN Staff Reporter
If you have no idea what “Brokeback Mountain” is by now,
you may not be gay after all.
The advance word from those
who’ve seen the film is far outpacing all of the anticipation that gay
America could muster upon learning that the now-classic short story
written by Annie Proulx would be brought to the big screen. Since its
premier at the Venice Film Festival, where it subsequently won the Golden
Lion (its top award), rumors have spread about viewers leaving the
theaters still openly weeping at the emotional climax of the
story.
Deterred by those same moviegoers’ assertion it is
undeniably a “gay cowboy movie,” the production company, Focus Features,
has elected for an extremely slow roll-out of the film to mainstream
America. As of this writing, “Brokeback” may open locally sometime in
early-mid January.
Along with this come questions from queer
theorists who ask why it is being considered brave and Oscar-worthy for
the heterosexual stars Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal to portray gay
when, on one hand, there are enough gay actors available to play the roles
already and, on the other, how much of a stretch is truly required to act
gay: aren’t the days of the Oscar-baiting performances of Tom Hanks (in
“Philadelphia”) and Greg Kinnear (in “As Good As It Gets”) long
gone?

Auto Insurer's Clever Advertising Pays Off-
Esurance's Director of Brand & Public Relations Scores Big with Secret
Agent 'Erin'
Kristin Brewe, Esurance's branding guru had this to say
about Erin and LGBT company outreach
Diversity Builder: So who is Erin? We all have seen the edgy animated
secret agent on the web and tv, but may not be familiar with her
background and how she evolved.
Kristin Brewe: Erin was launched on to the
world in her TV premiere in late July 2004. Her actual birthday (as
recorded in her official bio) is February 8, 1977. (She's an Aquarius.)
Since she's a special agent at a top-notch crime fighting unit AND an
insurance agent by day (as a part of her cover), she's too busy to date at
all, unfortunately. On Erin's entry into our marketing world, we decided
to try television advertising more than a year earlier than we had
planned, to broaden our media mix. So, I quickly got writing --
developing 3 concepts for live action and 3 concepts for animation.
Animation was the obvious choice--such great visuals and so
much room for imaginative storylines--and then we worked with our
animation studio, San Francisco's Wild Brain, to select the Erin concept.
We picked how she looked (especially that pink hair) by having our
associates vote on Wild Brain's great designs, which is all part of the
fun. I am really proud of the fact that we went from concept to on-air in
10 weeks.
Diversity Builder: Describe Esurance's marketing to the LGBT
Community.
Kristin Brewe: Our origins as a company were very direct response
focused, and, as we grew, we knew we needed to do more branding efforts.
In fact, the very first sponsorship activities we ever did as a company
were Pride-related, back in 2003. Why? First off, we're a San
Francisco-based company, and perhaps, that helps make us more aware of
what diversity really means. Second, as an auto insurance company, we
have an obligation to serve everyone's needs when they apply for
insurance. We understood that the LGBT community was often underserved in
terms of its auto insurance needs, particularly when it came it domestic
partnerships. Lastly, our broader target is Internet-savvy drivers who
transact heavily online. As you know, that's a characteristic of the LGBT
community--higher propensity for online transactions.
Diversity Builder: Do you offer join car insurance policies for domestic
partners?
Kristin Brewe: Since our beginnings as a company, we have allowed
domestic partners to be listed on the same auto insurance policy.
Esurance does what we do because it's the right thing to do--making it
easier for everyone to get the auto insurance that suits their needs. As
recently as 2004, some insurance companies still wouldn't allow two
unmarried people who live together to be listed on an auto insurance
policy.
Diversity Builder: What is on the horizon regarding Esurance's 2006 LGBT
marketing initiatives?
Kristin Brewe: This year, we're
expanded significantly into a broader spectrum of LBGT media, and will be
doing substantial print for the very first time. We're so excited! We
continue our sponsorships of some great events--Gay Days in Orlando,
Austin Pride (involvement which also includes the Austin LGBT Chamber of
Commerce), Amarillo Pride, and Atlanta Pride. On the print side, we'll be
working Genre Magazine and their sister publications in some key cities.
We're very, very excited about that! Also, we work with Gaywheels.com, as
you noted, and are exploring some other online opportunities targeting the
LGBT community. In San Francisco, we will again work with the Giants
(baseball) to promote and support "Until There's a Cure Day" to fight
HIV-AIDS-- where our associates enthusiastically volunteer their time in
addition to our financial support.
Hassle-free car insurance from Esurance is as easy as quote, buy,
print!

Ask the Plate
Spinner
It may seem
early to ask, but I’m throwing a spring “bash” this April, in my backyard.
The event is likely going to be in the evening. Any tips to make it
fabulous?"
“A Shining
Star”!
Try something different – forget your décor items,
your froo-froo bits and pieces. We suggest tackling your event, using
nothing but lighting effects.
Outside Lighting
101
Flood Lights – Fantastic for creating dramatic effects!
Try using them for UPlighting trees & other large foliage. They also can
create a stunning initial impression by lighting up the front of your
house.
However, try, if you can, to use some gel to add color.
Sheets of lighting gel are available in a myriad of colors from any
lighting/production store. Two important tips for working with gel:
1.Cut it into squares, not circles.
2.If you don’t have a
holder for your gel squares, use a few black binder clips – Never
tape!
Twinkie Lights – Ah yes, those infamous little monsters
that can drive you nuts!
Instead of going to the enormous
hassle of stringing them up all over the place, try this
instead:
Find one dramatic tree, run your lights around and up
the trunk, and then along the underside of the major branches. This can be
left up for months and will create a wonderful focal point in your
yard.
Important note – Spend the extra money on strands that
won’t completely go out when one bulb burns out and coat the strands in
cinnamon, to prevent squirrels and other varmints from chewing through
them – trust us, they will!
Check in next month for our
companion piece – Indoor lighting effects and creative uses for a
sarong!

E-Learning For Your Business
24/7
More than ever before, the
academic world relies on technology to help give students easier access to
the kinds of information, course-work and instruction that are often out
of the reach of ordinary Americans, either because of geography, costs or
time constraints. Now, thanks to the Internet, business training is no
exception.
At the U.S. Small Business Administration’s
extensive Web site, small business owners and entrepreneurs can now access
an online virtual classroom of business courses, workshops, information
resources, learning tools and counseling assistance through the agency’s
Small Business Training Network.
The Small Business Training
Network is an Internet-based learning environment – operating like a
virtual campus – offering online courses, workshops, publications,
information resources, learning tools and direct access to electronic
counseling, and other forms of technical assistance for entry level
entrepreneurs and experienced business owners alike, for students, for
home-based businesses and for women. There are key resources and
suggested courses aimed at pre-venture businesses and growing businesses
to meet all kinds of small business training needs.
The
Training Network, available on the Web 24 hours a day, operates like an
electronic umbrella under which many SBA and agency resource training
programs are captured, aggregated, sorted by content and made available in
multiple formats. It serves small business clients, agency resource
partners, other federal agencies and global students of
enterprise.
The Training Network was designed with the small
business entrepreneur in mind to provide interactive business guidance on
a range of topics. There are 12 training categories with more than 60
interactive courses and electronic guides that provide educational tools
and resources on entrepreneurship. Many of the courses include audio
sound bytes, quizzes and feedback.
Designed to help small
businesses compete in a constantly changing, global environment, the
Training Network makes SBA’s business management resources available
anytime and anywhere. Online course topics include Starting a Business,
Business Management, Financing, Marketing & Advertising, Business Planning
Tools, Government Contracting, Risk Management, E-Commerce, Federal Tax
Training, International Trade and Small Business Retirement. The Training
Network also includes a variety of learning tools and guides for easy
access and learning, as well as a comprehensive electronic
library.
Many of the learning opportunities offered by the
Network are developed by cosponsors (academic institutions and
corporations), some are developed by SBA’s resource partners and some are
developed internally through agency contracts. All of the offerings are
free, most are self-paced and the majority are considered “topical
primers.”
In addition to a wide selection of online offerings,
the Training Network serves as a window to all of the traditional,
face-to-face technical assistance programs offered by the agency.
Traditional training opportunities offered by SBA and its resource
partners around the country can be easily identified by visiting
http://www.sba.gov/calendar/.
The Training Network’s
virtual library features more than 200 free e-books and publications,
links to top business magazines and national newspapers, direct links to
colleges and universities that offer other online business training
courses and programs, and a section for young entrepreneurs to pursue
their business interests.
