    Seaworld's Social Networking Success

ImageWhen Chuck Cureau needed an animal trainer for SeaWorld San Antonio, he posted the job on his Facebook page. Cureau, an associate supervisor, also typed out posts on his BlackBerry to Twitter, and he fielded questions from job seekers about qualifications and more. He said, “It's a fun, new approach to business that’s also led to an increase in applicants from all over.” Cureau belongs to SeaWorld San Antonio's 20-person social media team. SeaWorld is one of the first big companies in San Antonio to embrace the new technology tools throughout its business. “We're not sure whether we're gurus or knuckleheads,” Cureau said. The SeaWorld social media team also includes general manager Dan Decker, director of operations Geoff Baldwin and education supervisor Jack Harvey. The team posts videos on SeaWorld San Antonio's YouTube channel, posts messages to Twitter, puts photos on Flickr and they plan to launch a new series of blogs next month. “Social media tools don't replace SeaWorld San Antonio's public relations, advertising and marketing campaigns, but complement them”, said Fran Stephenson, SeaWorld San Antonio's spokeswoman and a member of its social media team. “While it's too early to tell whether posting to sites such as Facebook and Twitter have increased park attendance overall”, she said, “she does have some early evidence that it's working.” SeaWorld San Antonio launched a campaign last year for its Journey to Atlantis roller coaster using Flickr,on-line meetup groups for roller coaster enthusiasts, and YouTube.com. Stephenson said that it led to more visitors for the roller coaster in the first few weeks of its launch. “For the first time, the No. 1 way people heard about the ride was through the Internet and not television.“ SeaWorld also gave hand-held Flip digital video cameras to the ride operators of Journey to Atlantis so that they could create their own videos to post to YouTube.
“Twitter, an online Web site that allows people to post 140-character updates to followers, helps improve communications at SeaWorld San Antonio internally and externally”, said general manager, Decker. “Our two most valuable resources are our animals and our people. He says that by using Facebook and Twitter, he now knows his employees better and he is also able to communicate with park guests. “It puts a personal face on our business, and it engages us in the conversation.”

    Image Emma's War

An Aid Worker, a Warlord, Radical Islam and the Politics of Oil-A True Story of Love and Death in Sudan.

Emma McCune's passion for Africa, her unstinting commitment to the children of Sudan, and her youthful beauty and glamour set her apart from other relief workers from the moment she arrived in southern Sudan. But no one was prepared for her decision to marry a local warlord-a man who seemed to embody everything she was working against-and to throw herself into his violent quest to take over southern Sudan's rebel movement.

With precision and insight, Deborah Scroggins- who met McCune in Sudan-charts the process by which McCune's romantic delusions led to her descent into the hell of Africa's longest-running civil war. Emma's War is at once a disturbing love story and an up-close look at Sudan: a world where international aid fuels armies as well as the starving population, and where the northern-based Islamic government-backed by Osama bin Laden-is locked in a war with the Christian and pagan south over religion, oil and slaves.

A timely, revelatory account of the nature of relief work, of the men and women who choose to cary it out, and of one woman's sacrifice to its ideals.

    Putting Things in Perspective

Africans probably look at our recession and laugh given their situation. One of the statistics that disturbs me the most is one I read in a U.N. report that states that by 2110 there will be an estimated 42 million orphans in Africa of which half will be due to AIDS.

Bethmas Kyamazima, co founder of Bwindi Orphans Development Centre in Uganda writes, “Poverty and HIV/AIDS has done enough harm to the children of Africa. Looking at children left alone with no hope of how to get food or clothing leaves a caring person crumpled in tears. Dear friend, why don’t all of us who have a heart of love and care, develop some feelings for the suffering children of the world? How does someone feel about children living on the streets or looking at six children after the burial of their last parent. Some think we have tried enough, but trying has not made things any better, because we still have street children, orphans and vulnerable children, who curse the day they were born and need our closest care, feelings and touch.”

I know there is skepticism about donating to organizations that are facilitating healing in developing countries. People are not sure their money is really being put to good use. Well, you can email Bethmas personally in Uganda at bwindioorphans@yahoo.com and donate directly to her grass roots organization. I also, personally know the director of Mothers Without Borders, Kathy Headlee, and I ask that you take my word for the fact that her organization is doing some amazing work. (check out the website below) There is hope!

This recession could be good for us Americans in a lot of ways. Maybe we'll stop consuming so much more than we need. Maybe we'll simplify our lives, slow down and focus more on the things that really mater, our relationships. So, my question is, are you willing to give up buying your Starbuck's mocha lattes, or the extra clothes, or electronics or whatever it is that you don't really need and use that money to help save another child? Please, let’s not continue to put our blinders on to the pain of these children and let it help us put things into perspective, being grateful that we are still so blessed in this country no mater how bleak it may look.

"Diversity Spotlight: Personal Thoughts from the Editor's Desk

I got a phone call from one of my dearest friends and she started talking to me about her housing situation. She has been “renting” a room from another dearest friend, the owner of the home. They had an agreement that she would do a certain amount of help around the house in exchange for actually paying rent. She expressed to me how the “owner” had been leaving huge messes and not cleaning up after herself at all. She said she was feeling like she was being treated like the black servant of the house (the owner is white). Well, let me tell you, that really brought up some stuff for me especially because I know the owner really well and do not believe this was the case, at all. I said to her, “I don’t think this has anything to do with the fact that you are black. If you think it does, then I really think this has to do with your “stuff” around color and not hers.” This is not the first time that I have run into similar perspectives from her and I’m aware that this is not uncommon among some African Americans to automatically assume that some negative behavior towards them is because of their color. Now I’m not saying that this doesn’t happen, but I do believe that holding onto that belief perpetuates the problems because it perpetuates the anger and blame and also the guilt that “white” (Euro-Americans-if I were to be PC) people feel. And, the guilt that many white people feel, in general, has definitely played a part in choices being made because of color that aren’t necessarily fair or just. In my opinion, it would be hugely helpful if we would all stop this unconscious living in the past and focusing on all the “wrongs”. Yes, there is discrimination, not only based on color, but race, religion, sexual orientation, etc, but focusing on the problem instead of the solution never works.

Most discrimination comes from judgements based on assumptions and generalizations, some of which we back up by past experiences or by what we believe to be “truth”. And so, I think that an important first step to healing these discriminating situations is for each of us to just start really consciously noticing when we make judgements (and we usually make A LOT, it’s human nature, don’t ya know). I think you’ll find that if you start doing this, you’ll be surprised at how many judgements just automatically come to us out of habit. Who really has any right to judge, anyway? Does anyone every really have enough information to be able to do that fairly and justly? When we judge, it’s like we’re making ourselves gods. It’s like we think we know better or we know the “truth”, but usually it’s something we were just taught by someone else that we took on as the truth. Recognizing when we are making judgements is a huge first step because then we can actually start opening ourselves up to looking at someone with a different light and we may even feel inclined to take the time to get to know that individual. That’s when the miracle happens and we usually discover that we all have a lot more in common than we do different. Most of us want to be happy, healthy, safe, loved, successful, wealthy. . .etc. Most of us want the best for our children.

I went to a private highschool in Khartoum, Sudan for a year. This is the capital of Sudan and a lot of embassy kids from all over the world went there. That year my best friends were from Sudan, Italy, Pakistan, Germany, and Austria. That year I learned the profound lesson that not only do we all have more in common than different, but that the differences bring such a richness to our lives- it helps us see things with a newperspective, it opens us up to trying new things, and it makes life so much more interesting. So, what’s my solution? How about opening up our minds and hearts a little wider. I promise, it won’t hurt. .. the contrary, it will feel so good!
